Project Overview
The Harry Butler Science Centre is a new environmental research, education and community engagement facility being developed at Murdoch University’s South Street campus. Located at the gateway to the Beeliar Wetlands, the Centre will provide a collaborative hub where community, industry and academia come together to develop scientific solutions that support the coexistence of human development and biodiversity.
The Centre will support environmental research and outreach programs delivered through the Harry Butler Institute, including education programs for thousands of Western Australian school students each year. Sustainability, connection to the surrounding wetlands and recognition of the cultural significance of the area to the Whadjuk people are central to the project.
Project Management
Shape Management is providing full project management services across the design, procurement and construction phases of the $23 million development.
Our role includes:
Overall project leadership and management on behalf of Murdoch University.
Management and coordination of the multidisciplinary design team, led by Woods Bagot.
Management of stakeholder and user engagement and integration of operational, research and education requirements into the design.
Management of project budget, programme, risk, governance and reporting.
Coordination of statutory approvals and key project interfaces.
Development and management of the procurement strategy.
Procurement and appointment of SHAPE Australia through an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process.
Management of the ECI phase, including design development, buildability, programme, cost planning and value management.
Management of the transition from ECI to a Lump Sum construction contract.
Ongoing management of the contractor, consultants and client stakeholders throughout construction.
Contract administration, change management, programme monitoring and project reporting through to practical completion and close-out.
Outcome
Currently under construction and scheduled for completion in December 2026, the Harry Butler Science Centre will create a future-focused home for environmental research, education and community engagement at Murdoch University.
Shape Management’s end-to-end role has provided continuity from design development and consultant management through ECI procurement and construction delivery, maintaining alignment between the University’s vision, stakeholder requirements, project budget and programme throughout the project lifecycle.
